Welcome to Sinai, welcome to St Catherine!

Girl Hat

The beduins of the Gebeliya Tribe - 'the people of the mountains' - are the descendants of people from the Balkans and the Mediterranean who were sent by Emperor Justinian to Sant Katherine to protect the Monastery. Since the sixth century AD, the Gebeliya (Jebeliya) live in the high mountains of Sinai, protecting the monastery and guiding people in need.

Mt. Sinai walks

Most people come to St. Catherine to visit the Monastery of St. Katherine, the site of the Burning Bush, and to climb Mt. Sinai (Gebel Musa) to see the sunrise from the top where Moses is believed to have received the Ten Commandments. The Monastery is closed on Fridays and Sundays and these days are more quiet, but at other times there are several hundred people arriving from the coastal towns at night. We offer three alternative ways to visit these important holy sites.

Mountain trekking

Treks involve 3-4 hours, 5-6 hours or 7-8 hours of walking a day. Either camels carry the equipment, food, water and other supplies or they are carried by the trekkers and water is obtained at wells and natural springs along the way. The treks can last from 1 day up to 15 days and we can tailor-make a trek for you if you wish. Accomodation is either in the open or tents, or bedouin houses, shelters and caves, depending on the season and your preferences.

Desert safari

The desert is very different from the high mountains but just as stunning. It can be easily visited on your way to or from St. Catherine. We can organize jeep, camel or walking safaris which can last from one day to several days. Desert safaris can be combined with mountain treks - see our combo section. Possibilities are endless and we can tailor-make any special program if needed.

Rock climbing

The Saint Katherina area has some of the best rock climbing locations in the Middle East - towering granite mountains with sheer rock faces. We can provide guides to take you to the places, but you have to bring your own equipment, be an experienced climber and provide your own safety - we do not take any responsibility. We can set up base-camps in the more remote locations and provide everything you need; guide, camels to transport your gear, all food and a cook so when you return the meal is ready.

Mountain garden retreats

There are several hundred gardens in the high mountains, a tradition which goes back to early Byzantine times. Some of the gardens have been upgraded to provide better facilities for visitors. Although all gardens are beautiful, we have selected the most beautiful, tranquil and secluded places in spectacular natural settings for people who want to take it easy and relax. You can stay in a selected garden or take a walk to discover other places. Our garden walks will take you from one garden retreat to another at an easy pace, along the way seeing other sights of interest as well.

Religious Sites

For those of you who are religious and want to visit the many holy places that the Sinai peninsula has to offer, our guides can lead you to quiet places for prayer and reflection. Note: chapels and monasteries are not open for the public. You can only see them from outside, unless you have made special arrangement with the Monastery of St. Catherine or its head office in Cairo.

Events, entertainment

Visiting a Bedouin community wouldn't be complete without sitting around the open fire and listening to traditional music. It can be organized in the desert or in the garden of the Bedouin Guesthouse - either way the atmosphere is magic. We can provide simple or more hearty traditional Bedouin food, and of course endless cups of tea, coffee or herbal drinks.
